What Is The Rat Race? And How To Get Out Of It

Most people would like to have more control over their lives.

More people would like to have more control over their time.

You may be thinking…what is this guy talking about?

You may feel that you have control over your life and your time.

  • Do you have a full-time job?
  • Do you have a boss?
  • Do you have debt?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, you may not have as much control as you think.

You may be actually stuck in the rat race.

But don’t worry, today I will fill you in on the rat race, how to know if you are stuck in it, and how to get out of it.

What is the rat race?

If you are a follower of my blog, you may have heard me mention the rat race from time to time.

If you are new to my website, then you may be wondering…what is the rat race?

Robert Kiyosaki made the rat race term popular in the book, Rich Dad Poor Dad.  You can find this book and other great books on my recommended reading list.

The rat race is when you are stuck in a cycle of working just to pay bills. You may not even realize you are in it.  You are racing against others to get ahead but you may be focused on the wrong things.

Are you stuck in the rat race?

This is a question you have to answer for yourself.  And you have to be honest with yourself.

Are you focusing on the right things in life?

Often, people get caught up in their jobs and their careers.  You may become a work-a-holic and focus on getting ahead at work.  Then work becomes a major part of your life.

But life is so much more.

  1. There is family…spending time with the people you cherish most.  Being there for your kids and not missing the important moments.
  2. There is health that you need to worry about. Being the best at your job is great, but is it worth risking your health because you are constantly stressed?
  3. There is happiness and peace in your life.

These are all important things.

You know they are important, but when you get caught up in your daily routines, you may lose sight of what is truly important.

The toll on your health and family

Sure, you work hard for the right reasons.  You want to make a great life for yourself and your family.  But if the balance is not there, then you work hard for the people you care about…but you miss precious moments in the lives of the people you care about.

You work hard and have rushed meals.  When you rush your meals, you end up grabbing fast food with high calories and high cholesterol.  Over time, this deteriorates your health.

Or maybe your job stresses you, and you need to smoke cigarettes to relieve your stress.

You are so busy that you forget to exercise.

When this cycle continues for years, your family life and health can really suffer.

The toll on your finances

And yes, the rat race can affect your finances too.

You may work hard to earn your money, but then you may spend it on stuff you don’t need.

You may save some but most people don’t.

Many people are so busy that they don’t think about saving or investing their money.

Some people never learned how to manage their finances.

You usually learn finance from your parents because it is not taught in school.  And if your parents never learned how to manage their finances, how can they teach you?

You watch the decisions they make about finance and adopt them as your own.

And yes, this creates a cycle.

So, in the end, you end up…

  • working hard at a job that doesn’t pay you enough
  • with a boss that controls your time and schedule
  • having increased stress
  • having decreased health
  • with debt

You are stuck in a cycle where you go to work to earn money to pay bills.  Then you have to go back to work to earn money to pay bills.   And the cycle repeats.

Plus, you are missing important moments in your family’s life.

That is the rat race.

How to get out of the rat race

“Today, I often meet people who are too busy to take care of their wealth. And there are people too busy to take care of their health. The cause is the same. They’re busy, and they stay busy as a way of avoiding something they do not want to face.” ~ Robert Kiyosaki (Quote from Move Me Quotes)

I understand you are busy, but if you want to get out of the rat race, you have to change your focus.  You must determine what is truly important to you.  Then you must live your life for the people and things that you value.

But I’m not going to just leave you hanging.

Here are some steps you can take today…to help your tomorrow.  I may give you a lot, but don’t let it overwhelm you.

It only takes one step to begin change.

You don’t have to do everything.  You can choose something that resonates with you and do that.

Or you could do more.

But you should at least do one thing today to start your journey of getting out of the rat race.
